THE RIPTIDE MOVEMENT

The Riptide Movement are four friends from Lucan who began their musical journey in 2006.

They self-released their first two albums ‘What About The Tip Jars?’ (2009) and ‘Keep On Keepin’ On’ (2012) – a snapshot of a band in evolution, full of character and brimming with songs whose passionate and raucous charm still makes for a great listen. Building their fanbase through relentless touring, they have an insatiable drive, dedication and work ethic, their first major show at Dublin’s Olympia in 2012 was a gamble.

Their live shows are legendary and perhaps their most defining quality:

“Playing live is everything to us, no matter what the gig, venue or audience we’re playing to – we give it our all, we play like it’s the last time we’ll ever play. The buzz from playing live is better than any drug, it’s what keeps us going.” Mal, TRM

After recording their third album – the Number One, gold-selling ‘Getting Through’ – independently TRM booked two shows, one in LA and one in New York, to give the industry a chance to get on board. Off the back of those shows, they signed with a major label, but their mindset has never changed– work just as hard. Keep on keeping on, no matter what.

The Riptide Movement’s current single “Changeling” is receiving massive radio-play. The single is from their Top 5 charting album “Ghosts”, available now.

KILA

Formed at school in Dublin’s late 1980’s, Kíla are heralded as one of Ireland’s most innovative and exciting bands. Their unique sound has been ever evolving, rooted in tradition, yet inspired by a myriad of influences and ideas from all around the world. Often defined as contemporary Irish World music, Kíla fuse Irish (Gaeilge) lyrics, Irish folk instruments such as Fiddles, Uilleann pipes, Bodhrán, Bones and Woodwinds with Djembe, Congas, Drums, Mandolins, Brass, Acoustic and Electric Guitars. Kíla’s eight members come from the differing musical backrounds of traditional, classical and rock. The result is a fresh blend of freewheeling instrumentals, furious jigs, and primal rhythms that transcend the traditional boundaries of Irish music. Bristling with passion and energy their 19th album “Alive Beo” (3rd live album) is set for official release St Patrick’s Day, March 17th.

OVERHEAD, THE ALBATROSS

“With a closely calibrated sound that could be described as post-rock if you were especially lazy, the band interweaves progressive coils of electronics, liquid guitar work (courtesy of Luke Daly, Stevie Daragh and Vinny Casey) and a taut rhythm section (Ben Garrett, drums, and Joe Panama, bass) that fuse into widescreen, skyscraping melodies that define the word “bliss”.

Indeed, it is the melody lines that glue one end of a piece of music to the other, and like the band they nabbed their name from, there is no end of quicksilver tuneage here.

Factor in ambient vocals (Emilie Daly), strings (viola, violin, cello) and brass (trumpet, trombone, saxophone), and you have a complete layered package that delivers on dynamics, which in turn run parallel with responsive experimentation.

The result is an intuitive blend of psych-influenced rock and numerous staggering sonic declarations.”  –  Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times

THE ESKIES

Having been cast out, blacklisted, rejected and ejected from gentlemen’s clubs far and wide, five dejected cast asides joined forces in what was to be their own celebration of commonality.

Purveyors of music that meanders from sea soaked waltz to Italian tarantella, from Brassy funeral march-esque lament to weep along Klezmar knees up, from chain gang holler to rag time finger snap. Skipping through the dark side of anything that makes you want to dance, steeped in melodrama and usually with not a small amount of tongue in cheek.

The Eskies have brought this unique brand of folk noir/gypsy jazz/sea shanty and swaggering stage spectacle to ballrooms and booze houses far and wide, sullying soirees and lowering inhibitions of get togethers and social occasions wherever they have ventured.

Their debut album ‘After The Sherry Went Round’ is in shops now and is also available for download from iTunes.

“Like a wagon storming the citadel, The Eskies’ brand of gothic-tinged gypsy-folk swaggers out of the speakers with intent.” – Hot Press Magazine

“From the sinister sway of ‘Eloise’ through to the jaunty ‘Jesus Don’t Save Me’ and the driving ‘Jailhouse Sun’, The Eskies have delivered a fascinating blend of fun-fuelled folk.” – The Independent

“The album is a raucous fanfare of folk, swamp blues and unquenchable merriment, paired with brain-burrowing melodies and witty lyrics, delivered at breakneck speed.” – Goldenplec

ANDY SMITH (ex. Portishead)

Andy Smith was the first DJ to release a multi-genre mix album on a major label. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets back in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut’s Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more – The Document filled the void.
It segued tracks from artists such as Tom Jones, Peggy Lee (sample source for the Beastie Boys single Ch-Check It Out), The Jungle Brothers, and even The Spencer Davis Group.

This appreciation of different genres made Smith the ideal person to provide sample material for Portishead on their first two albums. He went on to make his name as the band’s international tour DJ – reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJ-ing. Hip-hop elements formed the basis of the unique Portishead sound.

Since the Portishead tours Andy has established himself as an underground producer of some of the most irresistible hip-hop breaks-based music around, working with Scott Hendy (Boca 45) under the name Dynamo Productions. His discography of mix CD’s since 1998 includes The Document 1, 2 & 3, The Trojan Document, The Greensleeves Document, Andy Smith’s Northern Soul, Diggin in The BGP Vaults, Freestyle Mix, Jam Up Twist, Jamaican Funk, New Orleans Funk and many more.

Andy regularly appears in clubs across the world and his strong cult following has secured him constant DJ bookings internationally.

LANKUM (LYNCHED)

Lankum are a four-piece traditional folk group from Dublin, Ireland, who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material.

Having spent the last number of years performing as ‘Lynched’, the band decided that they would no longer continue with the name due to the unavoidable implications that it has in regards to acts of racist violence. Their new name comes from the ballad ‘False Lankum’, as sung by the Irish Traveller John Reilly Jr.

A band that refuse to be pigeonholed, tied down by genres, trends or musical movements, The Pale are one of the most compelling acts to emerge from Ireland’s indie music scene.

The band started life in Dublin’s Northside in the early 90’s but drew their influences from far beyond.  Their  live reputation is hard earned, with sets jumping between indie-pop, reggae, Eastern European folk, all presented with a wry lyrical twist and frenetic energy. Mandolins and bouzoukis duel with guitar, synths and drums, all propelled by their inimitable stage presence and striking musical prowess.

MINDRIOT

After a packed year in 2016 that had every thing from the release of their critically claimed Album “Brothers”, to a string of tour dates and festival appearences which held a headline stage slot at Indiependence 2016 and being hailed as one of the acts of the weekend by the Irish Examiner “unapologetic, unrelenting, and unmistakably fun”. MINDRIOT rounded off 2016 with the release of a new single “Speak”, the charity single in support of Pieta house went straight to No.1 in the google play and iTunes rock charts.

2017 has not slowed in any way as Tony, Steve & Mike make their way around the Irish radio stations and kick of their Spring Irish Tour in March which will see dates in Kilkenny, Cork and Dublin to start with along with another string of Irish Festival appearances.
Formed over two decades ago as childhood friends, the band openly admit that although there has been laughter, tears, hatred and love over the years, the members have drawn on those experiences and moulded their musical style to what it is now. Mike Hoye comments “Each track has it’s own story to tell. And we are telling a story of the life we have had. Out of all the material we have written in the past, this year we feel like we’ve found our feet and produced the 12 tracks that we are the most proud of! ‘Brothers’ is our story and you’re listening to the first chapter.

MARK GEARY

Singer/songwriter Mark Geary came to NYC in 1995 with a one-way ticket from Dublin, $100 in his pocket, and a green card. Recognized for a decade as one of the East Village’s favorite performers before moving back to Ireland, Mark is a top 40 artist in Ireland: “33 1/3 Grand Street” and “Ghosts” are both nearing Gold status there, and the Irish Voice named “Ghosts” the Best Album of 2005. Mark appeared as an actor in Michael Almeyreda’s “Trance” (with Christopher Walken), and Denis Leary has used him in several of his shows.

Geary started out playing with Jeff Buckley at the legendary Café Sin-e (started by Mark’s brother Karl) and has since shared stages with Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer, The Pretenders, Coldplay, Sinead O’Connor, the Frames and Swell Season.  Scouting music for a film, producer Gill Holland became so enamored with Mark’s music (not realizing until a live show at the Mercury Lounge that Mark Geary was NOT a famous Dublin resident, but in fact, Gill’s local bartender) that he started sonaBLAST! Records.
In 2004, “Ghosts” opened at #12 in Ireland and features background vocals by Josh Ritter and Oscar winner Glen Hansard (Frames/Swell Season).  “Suzanne” was on the first Starbucks/Hear Music Compilation, and Mark was featured on NPR and World Café with David Dye. He has made multiple appearances at SXSW, NXNE, CMJ and the Sundance and Woodstock Film Festivals.  He was a featured guest on Atlanta’s FOX-5’s Morning Show (one million viewers).

Citysearch says Mark is “part unself-righteous Elliot Smith, part multi-faceted Van Morrison” and that he “touches the heart the way David Gray wishes he could.”

WOLFF

A busy port town in Ireland’s South East is the last place you’d expect such a fearless, dark & raw sound to emerge from. With the respective birthplaces of blues & grunge situated thousands of miles away, location becomes a mere fact of conscious reality once you let yourself in. Creating in a dimly-lit basement during twilight hours under a shroud of solitude, the songs seem to come from somewhere else. This is his world, one of primal reactions, of pure instinct, a world which has been painted using the darkness in which it was created.
Thunderous drums, growling bass, ferocious guitars and howling vocals combine to bring a huge sound to life on stage. Blending the power & fire of traditional blues with trashy garage rock riffs & in-your-face vocals, WOLFF strikes a shadowy figure. Like the lyric says ‘You can sleep when you’re dead & done’ and it looks like this beast is just waking up.

In a Cork Independent article Blaming Hannah’s lyrics were described as “unapologetically honest”, with songs that are “heavily influenced by their experiences of youth culture”. The band started off writing their own original content, and playing gigs in their local town of Kinsale, followed by numerous gigs around Cork City in venues like Crane Lane. At the same, recording of the bands debut EP began in March of 2016. Over the summer the band played numerous gigs around Ireland ranging from Dolans Limerick, to the Rose of Tralee Festival, to Whelan’s in Dublin. On October 30th the band launched their debut single “I’m Alive” on Spotify, iTunes and all major music providers and have enjoyed a very positive response, with over 6.5k Spotify plays and a sold-out single launch gig in The Kino, Cork. They have been likened to The Beta Band, Todd Terje and St. Germain.  Live the two mix their synth sounds with guitars, drums, samples and vocals which makes for an instrument-swapping live performance. They have been known to explore some house and acid sounds along the way and improvisation is always an important part of a show in order not to stray too far from the musicianship of a live band.

At age 18 Elmore began playing shows in local bars and venues. Uploading his covers and originals to online platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, he gained great confidence from the feedback he received.

At 21 Elmore headed towards Western Europe on a busking tour. Leaving with nothing but some musical equipment and a very limited amount of money he began playing music on the streets of Berlin and Amsterdam. Selling CD’s to fund his trip, Elmore spent 3 months moving from city to city before he soon decided to make a more permanent move to Manchester in the UK where he continued busking to pay his way. This experience helped him to develop an organic fan base throughout the UK and Europe who have proven to be a huge support to him when releasing his own music.

Elmore is now back living in Wexford, Ireland, and is currently busy working on his debut EP with his new management and production team at Savee Entertainment Group.
Following on from the recent success of his debut single release “IM STILL HERE”, Elmore is excited to be releasing his next single titled “CLOSE TO YOU” which is out this April.

Since then they have toured the country extensively opening for higher profile acts including David Kitt, Tír na nÓg, Michele Stodart (The Magic Numbers) and Malojian.

Frankenstein Bolts have successfully completed a crowdfunding campaign to help bring to fruition their second album, due for release in 2017.

EMMA LOU & THE AGENDA

‘After forming in late 2015 Dublin based soul outfit Emma Lou & The Agenda released their debut EP in May 2016 to positive reviews. Their steady rise ever since (Electric Picnic, a headline show at Whelan’s as well as a ‘Ones to Watch’ performance at the same venue, the Late Late Show, Gigonometry Presents…) sees them ready to soar into the musical stratosphere.
Emma Lou’s unique voice is both powerful and fragile, soulful and strong, and draws the listener into her world, where humour mixes with heartbreak. Backed by the trio of Manny on drums, Adam on bass and Richie on guitar Emma Lou & the Agenda have found the perfect blend for our times.
The band are currently putting the final touches to their new EP scheduled for release in April 2017.

THE POX MEN

We are the Pox Men, formed in the bogs of Donegal thousands of years ago, we recently ventured out into the cold modern air, with a bag of songs and a wheelbarrow full of instruments. Fueled by poitin, mushrooms and spuds, we roar and shout and sing and play, about the horses, the wee folk, the witches, the turf, the thunder and lightnin’, and the silver tractors of ancient times. We are Bill on vocal chords and guitar strings, Will on electrified guitar, Kev on acoustical bass, Mike on the beating barrels, and occasionally, if the moon is in the right place, we have a mysterious fiddler appear, who we’ve never dared to ask his name. We’re tryin’ to learn the tin whistle too.

GRAND

Described as a melting pot of influence ranging from Blues to Ska, Reggae, Swing and on toward Punk, Gypsy Folk and Irish folk (or ‘skappalacian’ music as we like to call it). The group was conceived through a shared love of these types of music; however our original music is our way of taking these older styles and using them to create something new. Polyphonic melodies are our cup of tea and every member of the band can take the lead while also playing his or her part in creating the wall of sound. Philip (Phily) Kermode provides the main vocals, whilst every other member of the band sings (but mostly roars) backing vocals. Peter Barnett (Double Bass) Daniel McEvoy (Snare and Percussion) and John Hand (Cajon) AKA the steam-train drive the group forward with pounding groove and rhythm. Robin Matthews (Banjo) & Sile Ni Rian (Fiddle) add a twist of folk to the group, switching between chords and melody just as seamlessly as they switch from traditional to more modern styles. On the top of it all sits the screaming/rasping trumpet of Kiefer Wilton, providing the main riffage in place of the typical rock-band lead guitar. Having gigged extensively in the Ireland on the festival circuit of 2015/2016, which consisted of Vantastival, Body & Soul, Knockanstockan, Scrobarnach, Electric Picnic and recently returning from the UK, we pride ourselves in making audiences move their limbs, tighten their facial muscles and get loose!!! Tipped by Hotpress magazine as “one to watch”, GRAND have recently completed their second studio effort entitled “The Thrill of the Chase” , due to be released by late autumn.

From the sumptuous suburbs of Dundalk and trendy potholes of Emyvale come Accidents in the Workplace, a band whose blend of funk, rock, blues and “other” creates the musical equivalent of sprinkling salt and pepper on a bowl of ice cream. Between them they have achieved rave reviews of past releases, high praise from live performances and many a hat tip for generating copious amounts of craic. Having spent the second half of 2016 playing festivals and some well renowned venues, Accidents in the Workplace have earned a reputation as an exciting and must see act. They were chosen by Whelan’s of Dublin as one of their “Ones to Watch” for 2016. The band recently entered the studio to begin work on their debut album. Their first single ”How?” was released in March 2017 to rave reviews from the likes of BBC’s Across The Line who praised their “Fresh, Bright and Adventurous” sound. LOWLIGHT GATHERING

Lowlight Gathering’s musical journey began just over 2 years ago in Monaghan. Singer – songwriter, Charlie Livingstone (Guitar and vocals) brought together a number of local musicians with a mutual love for acts like Bon Iver, City Colour and Jeff Buckley and set about with the simple goal in mind of creating some original music that would make audiences fall in love with their relaxed, harmony laden sound. Gregory O’ Neill (Bass) and Michael McKenna (Percussion and vocals) began working with Charlie to create the backbone of the Lowlight Gathering today. The style of music the band created was unique from the very start. The genre proved hard to pigeonhole which led them to simplify it as ‘folk –rock’. The band has played support to such acts as The Hothouse Flowers, The Riptide Movement, Red Empire and Ryan Sheridan to name but a few . Throughout Lowlight Gathering’s short lifetime, additional musicians have joined the 3 initial members. In January 2016, Danny Mahoney (Keyboard and vocals) and Shane Murphy (Electric guitar) joined the band and both new members brought their own individual style and ideas to the group and made a significant impact to the sound that is unmistakably the sound of the Lowlight Gathering. The addition of two electronic instruments brought the band away from their acoustic roots and helped develop a truly unique sound. Intense harmonies now compliment most songs as they further try to push the boundaries of their original music.

THE LOST GECKO

At the heart of ‘The Lost Gecko’ is singer and songwriter Malcolm Urquhart. Urquhart cites as main artistic influences Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Elvis Presley, Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Howard, and John Butler. Audiophiles will mostly detect in the music of the Lost Gecko vocal elements of Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, along with songwriting that blends Bon Iver’s neo-folk with the intensity of Sigur Ros and the powerful delivery of Smashing Pumpkins. This undercurrent of grunge-era passion runs throughout the Lost Gecko’s music, charging its mellow folk tones with an intensity not often found in the genre.

Malcolm penned the song ‘A penny for your thoughts’ for Cork Penny Dinners also which raised over 14,000 euro. This went towards feeding the 1500 people that walk through their doors every week.

The Lost Gecko are regulars on the Cork music scene. and have a New Ep called ‘Unphotographable’.
Urquhart is joined by Elaine Mccarthy on Celllo that adds an other worldly element to the music as does Jamie Stanton with his beats and interjecting guitar melodies.

THE TWISTED SISTERS

The Twisted Sisters are a banterful bunch of friends and fun lovin hallions who love crankin up the craic – an original band who marry music with comical lyrics – critically acclaimed and globally established with irreverent lyrics as subtle as a kick in the teeth!! Hailing from the fair County of Armagh, though spotted on many continents, the sisters front a zany, high energy, eclectic band whose aim is to have major fun elevating their vibe into another dimension. Having the craic is the cornerstone of their culture and music. Raising the vibration in entertaining the crowd and themselves, engaging and uplifting the audience with their infectious energy, is their buzz!

Craic: fun, laughter (more head thrown back than tee-hee-hee!!). Never mind the facts when the wildly exaggerated version gets more laughs! ‘Mighty craic’ is optimum, ‘no craic at all’ doesn’t bear thinking about!
Their style, contemporary folk with a twist, falls across many genres, one of our favourite descriptions being Sunshine Punk Folk’n’Roll!

The Twisted Sisters aim to crank the craic up to 90 with their brazen songs, explicit lyrics and spirited performance!
Caution – PG!!

Duke Ellington said there’s only two kinds of music: good music, and the other kind. And then there’s the Swinehounds. The other other kind. A little bit of rag, a little bit of stride. A little bit of slink and a little bit of stomp. A wailing horn and a weeping piano, a walking bass and a sliding trombone, it’s New Orleans by way of Tin Pan Alley and stopping off at every dive bar along the way. Make a joyful noise. And if you see it cheaper, buy it.
